November Newsletter

► October 15, 2013 we received notification of a decision from the City’s Zoning Hearing Officer. This was the decision for Children’s Treatment Center asking for a variance to locate a Community Residential Program home closer than 1500 feet to the existing CRP home located in our neighborhood. The City denied the variance and the Children’s Treatment Center has appealed the decision to the City’s Board of Appeals. We will again be representing our neighborhood December 17, 2013 at the Board of Appeals asking that the denial of the variance be upheld. We now have additional support from the District 4 Coalition of Neighborhoods who voted unanimously in favor of maintaining the 1500 foot separation between CRP homes.
► Irene Minke and I attended the District 4 Coalition of Neighborhoods meeting Wednesday November 20, 2013. The guest speaker Matt Piccarelo is a field organizer for “Next Door Neighborhood”. This application facilitates communication between people living within the boundaries of a neighborhood association. Information about how the application is setup and neighbors are registered can be found at http://www.nextdoor.com.
Councilman Brad Winter will use some of his discretionary funds for a traffic study. The area to be studied is the intersection of San Antonio/ San Pedro and traffic impacts through our neighborhood resulting from the Broadstone Santa Monica and future development on the Del Rey property.
It appears there are changes in the works for the City’s plan for the Bosque. The City is taking public comment before the public review process begins. The proposed improvements are specific to the bosque between Central Ave. and I-40. The City is committed to development of projects that align with the Bosque Action Plan adopted in 1993. The City’s mailing address is City of Albuquerque, Park Management, P.O. Box 2107, Albuquerque NM 87154.
The coalition voted and adopted the Paws and Stripes as the charity they will support. Paws and Strips uses shelter dogs trained to assist Vets with PTSD.
Brad Winter will use $80,000 dollars from his discretionary spending account to replace the worn carpeting in the Cherry Hills Library.
The Parks and Recreation Department has been doing an outstanding job responding to park maintenance. The suggestion was made to contact the Parks Department directly instead of using 311 for better response.

► Bernalillo County has highlighted Property Tax Credits for Veterans. Any Bernalillo County veteran who served a minimum of 90 days consecutive active duty days (other than training), was honorably discharged and a legal resident of New Mexico qualifies for a property tax reduction. The taxable value of the real property will be reduced by $4000. This benefit is also available to non-remarried surviving spouses of a veteran who would otherwise qualify for the benefit.
There is a 100 percent disabled veteran property tax exemption for veterans who have been rated 100 percent disabled by the US Department of Veterans Affairs and a legal resident of New Mexico. The tax exemption qualifies for a complete 100 percent property tax waiver on their primary residence.
